Country Music Rocks

Do you have a music preference? I didn't, that is, until recently. I grew up during the rock and roll
rebellion of the 70's. Once on a date at a rock concert I actually fell asleep. You see, my brain is not wired to "appreciate" loud NOISE. My poor date must have thought, "what a dud"! Most of the music that shaped my youth came from the Hi-Fi record player at my grandparent's home. Some of their favorites were: Tony Bennet, Engleburt Humperdink, The Ink Spots (!), and let's not forget watching the Lawrence Welk show each week :) ... just to name a few. My dad listened to country music ... the old school country music ... sad twangy songs usually. That was not "my bag" ... but I heard it along with Glenn Campbell, Tom Jones, Mitch Miller (and the "bouncing ball" to the lyrics on tv), Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Neil Diamond, etc.
So all of a sudden this gal without her own music taste, discovers more recent country ... and the whole subculture of country gospel. Maybe it's the down-home-simple-easy-lyrics that touch my soul that I can relate to. By the way, my kids think it's cool to listen to Frank Sinatra ... What's your favorite music of today and yesterday?

I take my music by moods...sometimes I just love the new country...it either makes me laugh or cry and always has a message...sometimes I like the pop of the day...Kelli Clarkson and Pink or a little Rod Stewart...mostly his new covers of old Frank Sinatra stuff...:) I really jsut love most all of it! Right now I'm into some Spanish guy singing in ...of all things..Spanish! haha
(very romantic)

I've always been a big Motown fan - loved Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, etc. Also loved the oldies but goodies. I'd drive miles to hear a gospel choir sing and magnify the Lord. I also love Third Day. Actually I like all music except jazz, and that whiney country music HH listens to. I do like some country though. If it's got a good beat and you can dance to it, I'll give it a 99%!
I do remember the bouncing ball and I actually went with my dad to the Lawrence Welk show--wonaful awonerful!!

Dear Mrs. Mac...When I was growing up as a teenager, my mom wouldn't let us listen to the hit parade.
In Manitoba it was on for only one hour a day; 4:30 until 5:30 after school.
The rare time that we could sneak the radio, I really took advantage of it.
I loved the Four Seasons, Ricky Nelson,The Kingston Trio, The Everly Brothers, and my very favorite was Bobby Vinton.
I used to call my mother and father squares because they liked Perry Como and Bing Crobsy and those other guys.

I will never forget the day after Betty and I were on our own and bought a record player and the records we wanted to and Mom heard Bobby Vinton singing "Roses Are Red" and she admitted..."hmm...That music wasn't so bad at all!"

In the following years I started listening to the Blackwood Quartet and Gearge Bev Shea who I absolutely loved!

Now I am sorry to say that George is on the back burner now because now the only thing I listen to is Southern Gospel Quartet to which I am surely addicted!!
We used ot phone Jake Hess who was my favorite just to talk to him on the phone and he was always so nice..

Bernie loves the fifties and always has it going on his computer.

I was surprisd to hear you mention the Ink Spots.
Bernie never did meet his mom and dad but when we found his brother when Bernie was in his 30's, he mailed us pictures of them and told us that their favorite singers were the Ink Spots.
I looked up their web site a couple of years ago and I can see why they liked them so much. Their love songs are out of this world!
I was able to download the songs and put them on to cd for Bernie and for his brother...

I love postings like this Mrs. Mac!
It brings back so many memories!!

Did you ever guess it that I am ono long winder!!!...

Take care Gramma-in-waiting...Love Terry

PSI think that the Little Gift would just LOVE Southern Gospel music.!!
He is a lad after my own heart!

PS...Four years ago I looked after an elderly man who was in his late 80's and all he would listen to was Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Perry Como and Bing Crosby and I must admit Mrs. Mac.."Hmmm..that music wasn't so bad after all!"
Like mother like daughter, eh?

P.S. The Gift likes to dance to the music every day :)

Terry, are you another long lost relative or what??? I could have written that very sentence, especially the part about Bobby Vinton. I fell in love with Roses Are Red the first time I heard it, when I was about 11 years old, because my middle name is Rose. Since my first name is so very uncommon, it was quite a treat to hear "my name" in a song on the radio!

Mrs. Mac, I love all kinds of music, from the 50's right through to today. My kids love listening to Bobby Vinton, Everly Brothers and Jim Reeves, and I love Savage Garden, Mercy Me and Jars of Clay. Just to name a very few. ;-)

I did not listen to any kind of popular music, Christian or secular from the early 70's until about three years ago, so have spent the last little while getting caught up on all I missed.

I love listening to my favourites from the 60's now, on CD, for two reasons. The quality is so much better than it was on a tiny transistor or the kitchen counter radio back then, or even on a rinky tink old record player. But also, when I was a teenager I did not have the knowledge or ability to recognize the various instruments... the background music was heard as a unit. It is fascinating now to discover the various component parts of my favourite music, and to recognize the violins, flute, cello, trumpet, sax, and even the French horn or oboe. Music appreciation at its best! :-)

I have no real taste in music knowing only that I hate Country. I use to listen to music a lot via records. But as I get older I rarely listen to any music other than our church choir and special music groups at church. I suppose my favorite music would be Southern Gospel.

I grew up on Chuck Wagon Gang. As a teenager I liked Everly Brothers, "Wake Up Little Susie" and "Dream" Also Jim Reeves, Johnny Horton, and Ferlin Husky
Now I would say "Inspirations" Church groups and Southern Gospel.
Gramma :-)

I enjoy almost all kinds of music, but mainly I turn to Beatlesque pop... Strong melody, clever lyrics, jangly guitars. Because of my kids I've been listening to music that my teenage self ran screaming from. Just the other day we heard "Jive Talking" by The Bee Gees on the radio and my daughter said, "That's my favorite song!" so I had to go get their greatest hits CD and then admit that they had some awesome songs.

I'll take classical with my tea...I've always liked both! Before I was saved long long ago I enjoyed popular songs...like the Beatles, but thats history...=). the music that means the most to me now are the old-fashioned hymns. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound....
