Nathan's "College Adventures"

Today, the little fellow went on a field trip with all the area fifth grade classes to the local city college for an auditorium presentation relating to Martin Luther King Day. When I first got wind of the upcoming trip, I panicked a bit ... knowing my son all too well and his trepidation of sitting in a theater ... especially once the lights go out. I've been summoned in past years to come and pick up my little man because he wouldn't cooperate. This, mind you, when he was placed in a spec. ed class for severely handicapped kids (not to this mom's liking btw). Today went great .. he lasted about 1/2 hour and wanted to leave once the lights started going on and off. But, being in a school district that is way better organized, they were prepared ahead of time for his possible departure from the production. I did not have to go retrieve him. The more he's exposed to "normal" situations and not totally separated by a label, he has been expanding his horizons. I'll take a half hour of "normal" over missing out on the opportunity all together any day!

This is posting a few days late as I was under the weather with a minor bug. All better now, thanks for the prayers. 1/14/07

I think that is just so awesome. I am always glad when they incorporate all the kids who can function (with some extra help) into the classroom. I think it's great for the specific children and I think it's good for the "normal" (even though no one is normal) kids because sometimes they are sometimes the extra help. It gives them a sense of pride to help each other, and love each other.

I am so glad he had a good time!!

You know I DO feel bad that you have been under the weather but I am one for keeping promises even if they do come in a form of a threat.

I love this post. Every baby step leads to one more accomplishment. I'm still taking baby steps. There is something that comes up that I hesitate to do and I have to take that baby step every time..it never stops all though life. I'm so happpy for Nathan and you...way to go! I'm happy to read your feeling better. I think it has left your area and moved on to Michigan and its now my turn!

that's great that the school district is that much more involved and tuned in to his needs so they could recognize when he'd had enough and not have to call you!

So glad your feeling better, it always seems like such a waste of time to be sick, but it does make us slow down for awhile which is good. I love the stories you tell about your little "gift" as Terry calls him. And I'm certain you are blessed everytime he takes a step forward, no matter how small. Imagine how our heavenly Father feels when we take a step forward in our lives. gramma_s
